Yoga Nidra or yogic sleep is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. It is a state in which the body is completely relaxed, and the practitioner becomes systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following a set of verbal instructions. This state of consciousness (yoga nidra) is different from meditation in which concentration on a single focus is required. The yogic goal of both paths, deep relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation are the same, a state called samadhi.

The practice of yoga relaxation has been found to reduce tension and anxiety. The autonomic symptoms of high anxiety such as headache, giddiness, chest pain, palpitations, sweating and abdominal pain respond well. It has been used to help soldiers from war cope with PTSD.

Dharma Yoga is style of yoga named after one of the last living legendary yoga masters, Sri Dharma Mittra. Originally from Brazil, but now living and teaching in New York, Sri Dharma is known as the 'teacher's teacher'. In 1984, Sri Dharma completed the Master Yoga Chart (poster) of 908 Postures as an offering to his Guru for all yoga aspirants. Sri Dharma Mittra is the author of 608 Yoga Poses, published by New World Library, and was featured in the book American Yoga. His Maha Sadhana DVD set including Level I – “A Shortcut to Immortality” and Level II – “Stairway to Bliss” have been widely acclaimed for their lucid preservation of the main teachings of yoga. Sri Dharma and his son are the creators of the Dharma wheel. 

 

Dharma Yoga is a graceful, yet challenging form of yoga based on Sri Dharma Mittra’s almost fifty years of practice of classical yoga. The practice is appropriate for students of all levels, from beginner to lifelong practitioners and accessible to so many because it meets each student where they are and according to their condition. As students move through the different series, they are encouraged to go deeper and experience the practice in a meditative and spiritual way. Sri Dharma’s passion for helping students go deeper in their practice using only the best and most efficient techniques with the ultimate goal of Self-realization (gaining absolute knowledge of the True Self) is reflected in all aspects of the Dharma Yoga system.

In this hands-on workshop, learn how to work with and alleviate acute or chronic back pain with mindfulness, breath, posture and visualization. Niki will share her knowledge of psychology and the physical body.
